The reason people fill plates
Not the printing cost — that barely changes. Twenty-four parts printed one at a time use exactly the same plastic and only slightly more machine time.
The saving is human. One slice, one plate prep, one start, one removal session. If your hands-on time is twenty minutes per job regardless of how many parts are on the plate, then filling it divides that twenty minutes by 24. Labour is normally the largest term on a small part, so this is where the money actually is.
The reason not to
A full plate concentrates risk. If a layer shift or a filament tangle takes out the print at hour fourteen, you have lost $19.57 and eighteen hours of capacity in a single event, rather than one part.
That changes the sums for anything unattended and overnight. The rule of thumb worth applying is: fill the plate with things you have printed successfully before, and print one of anything new on its own.
Two practical limits
- A packed plate is slower per part than the model suggests. Travel moves between parts grow with count, and the printer cannot skip them.
- Heat behaves differently in the middle. Parts in the centre of a dense plate cool less between layers, which shows up as droop on overhangs and stringing that is absent when the same part is printed alone.
- The spool has to last. A plate consuming 557 g is more than half a reel, so a spool you thought was comfortably full can run out at three in the morning with nothing to show for the night.
