Which filament is food safe?

None, reliably, and the honest answer to this question is a refusal rather than a ranking.

The selector on this site caps the food-contact score below the maximum on purpose, so no material can ever present as ideal. PCTG, PET, PETG and polypropylene all reach that cap and share the top of the list. The cap is the point.

Three problems, and the polymer is the smallest

The surface. An FDM part is a stack of ridges with grooves between them. Bacteria fit in those grooves; a brush does not. A printed part cannot be cleaned to the standard a moulded one can, and dishwasher heat is above PLA's deflection band anyway.

The machine. Hotends, nozzles, PTFE liners and extruder gears are not food-grade components, and brass nozzles contain lead in most alloys. Everything that touches your filament on the way to the plate is in contact with what you are about to eat off.

The spool. Pigments, processing aids, plasticisers and flow modifiers in a consumer filament are not disclosed. A polymer being food-safe in the abstract says nothing about the compound wound on that particular reel.

What "food safe" would actually require

A certified food-grade filament, a stainless-steel nozzle, a dedicated machine with no history of other materials, a sealed or coated finished part, and use within limits the seal supports. Missing any one of those, the claim fails.

That is a specialist workflow, not a setting.

What is genuinely reasonable

  • Single use. A cookie cutter used once, a mould for a one-off, a dry-goods scoop. Layer-line contamination has no time to establish.
  • Dry goods at room temperature. No moisture, no heat, no growth medium.
  • Sealed parts. A food-safe epoxy or a lacquer converts the porous surface into a continuous one — and then the coating, not the filament, is the food-contact material.
  • Indirect contact. A jig that positions food without touching it for long is a different question entirely.

What to avoid outright

Anything wet, anything warm, anything reused, anything for children, and anything printed in a filled or specialty filament where the additive package is the whole product.
