Creality CR-10 Smart Pro: pricing a 30-hour print when a quarter of them fail

Everything distinctive about this machine follows from one number that is not the wattage: 400 mm of Z height on an open frame. Tall prints are long prints, long prints accumulate risk, and risk is a cost. On a machine like this, the failure allowance is not a rounding adjustment — it can be the largest single line in the estimate after machine time.

The arithmetic of a job that often fails

550 g, 30 hours, filament at $20/kg, machine time at 30 cents an hour, and a 25% failure rate — which is not pessimism for a 30-hour unattended print on an open machine in a room with a door:

The failure allowance is bigger than eight hours of machine time and eight times the electricity. The model behind it assumes a failed attempt wastes its full material and machine time, so the surcharge is what you must add to every successful print to pay for the unsuccessful ones — at a 25% rate, you expect to start four prints for every three you finish.

That is the number worth arguing with, and it is an input rather than a constant: put your own honest rate into the cost calculator. If yours is genuinely 5%, the same job is far cheaper. If you have never measured it, 25% is a better starting guess than 0.

The wattage feeding the electricity line is an estimate from comparable large open-bed machines, not a measurement on this one, and the specifications say so.

What tall actually costs you

A 400 mm print is not four times as risky as a 100 mm one; it is worse than that, because the failure modes compound with height:

  • The part gets top-heavy while the plate keeps reversing under it on the Y axis.
  • Adhesion has longer to fail. A corner that lifts imperceptibly at hour three is a detached print at hour twenty.
  • Any single power interruption costs the whole job unless the machine resumes cleanly, and a layer shift after a power blip is not always visible until the print is finished.
  • The spool must last. Running out at hour 26 is a specific kind of misery. Weigh the spool before you start and convert that mass to length with the filament length and weight converter rather than judging it by eye.

The most effective mitigation is not a setting. It is splitting the model and gluing it, which trades a design compromise for a dramatically better completion rate.

The open 300 mm bed

A wide plate with no enclosure is the most expensive arrangement here to hold at temperature, because every watt the bed produces is being lost to the room continuously. It is also, for PLA and PETG, completely fine — those materials do not want a warm chamber, and PLA actively prefers a cool one.

So the open frame is a limitation only if your materials warp. If they do, the plate size makes it worse rather than better, and no accessory fixes a 300 mm ABS panel in open air.

What it is genuinely good for

Big, simple, forgiving geometry in forgiving materials: cosplay props split into two tall pieces, planters, vases, lamp columns, storage bins, moulds for concrete. Work where the part is large, the tolerances are loose and the material is PLA or PETG.

It also has the quality-of-life fittings that its earlier siblings lacked — auto levelling, a filament sensor, a touchscreen, resume-after-power-loss — which on a machine whose prints run for days is the difference between an appliance and a hobby.

Its remaining argument: height per dollar

Superseded within its own manufacturer's range by faster CoreXY machines, and superseded in the large-format category generally by enclosed and by higher-throughput designs. Its remaining argument is height per dollar, which is a narrower argument than it was but still a real one — 400 mm of Z is not common at any price.

Reasons to buy height somewhere else

Parts that fit inside 250 mm are better served by a faster, quieter machine at the same money. High-shrinkage materials at size need a chamber rather than a plate. And anyone unwilling to run 30-hour prints, since the height is the reason to own it and 30-hour prints are what the height produces. The Elegoo Neptune 4 Max and the Anycubic Kobra 2 Max are the direct alternatives if what you actually want is footprint rather than height.
