Elegoo Centauri Carbon: an enclosed CoreXY at a price that used to buy a bed-slinger

For most of the past decade, the sentence "enclosed CoreXY with a hardened nozzle" implied a price several times that of a budget bed-slinger. The Centauri Carbon is one of the machines that broke that association, and the interesting question about it is not whether it is good value — it plainly is — but which corners were and were not cut to get there.

A costed job, at a European rate

Spain's regulated tariff is time-of-use by default, so overnight printing there is materially cheaper than the daytime figure. Using the daytime average of 24 cents/kWh, a 150 g part printing for 7 hours on $23/kg filament:

  • Filament: $3.45
  • Electricity: 19 cents, from 0.805 kWh
  • Machine time at 30 cents an hour: $2.10
  • 7% failure allowance: 43 cents
  • Total: $6.18

If you print that job overnight on an off-peak tariff, the 19 cents roughly halves and the total moves by a rounding error. That is the correct order of magnitude for an enclosed 256 mm machine, and you can substitute your own region in the cost calculator.

Nobody metered this model to get the 115 W; it was inferred from printers built to similar dimensions. Enclosed machines make that inference shakier than open ones do, because how hard the plate works depends on how warm the box around it has become, and no derivation can know what your room is doing.

The hardened nozzle is the headline feature

Most machines at any price ship with brass, and brass and filled filament are incompatible in a way that is not immediately obvious: the nozzle does not fail, it slowly widens, and your extrusion width drifts away from what you calibrated while every setting still looks correct.

Shipping with a hardened nozzle removes a purchase, a swap and a whole class of confusing symptoms. Combined with the enclosure, it means carbon-filled PETG and carbon-filled ABS work on the first day rather than after a shopping trip — and those two materials are the practical sweet spot for stiff functional parts on a desktop machine.

What 320 °C adds, and what it does not

The hotend reaches higher than the 300 °C that has become standard, which sounds like an incremental gain and mostly is. It brings some filled nylon grades into range and gives polycarbonate blends a workable window.

The limiting factor for those materials is not the nozzle, though — it is the chamber. This enclosure is passive: warmed by the bed, not held at a temperature. That is enough for ABS, ASA and fibre-filled nylons, whose fibre restrains contraction. It is not enough for unfilled nylon on a wide part or polycarbonate at size. If those are your target materials, an actively heated machine such as the Qidi Q1 Pro is a different and more appropriate class.

What was cut to hit the price

Being specific about this is more useful than praise:

  • The chamber is unheated. Covered above; it is the largest functional gap versus more expensive enclosed machines.
  • There is no first-layer inspection. Nothing watches the print but you.
  • The ecosystem is young. Spares, third-party accessories and community documentation for a recent machine are thinner than for a design that has been on sale for years, and that matters more than people expect on the day something breaks.

None of those is a reason not to buy it. All three are reasons a more expensive enclosed machine is not simply overpriced.

Failure modes to watch

Enclosed machines share the heat creep problem: warm chamber air rising into the toolhead until the extruder cannot push filament. It shows up on long prints rather than short ones, and it is the reason experienced owners crack the door open near the end of a tall ABS job.

The other one is specific to CoreXY at speed. Belt tension on both belts must match; when it does not, circles print as slight ovals and the symptom reads as a dimensional accuracy problem rather than a mechanical one. If holes print undersized in one axis only, check the belts before you touch the slicer.

Reasons to spend more, or less

Printing only PLA in the open makes the enclosure money spent on a capability you will vent away. A larger plate is a real want, and 256 mm is generous rather than large. And a long-established spares and accessory ecosystem may be worth more to you than the newest specification — the trade is real, and for a machine you depend on it can be the deciding one.
