Bambu Lab A1 mini: the cheapest machine here to run, and why

Almost every conversation about 3D-printing running costs starts in the wrong place. People ask about speed, or about the size of the power supply, when the number that actually decides the electricity bill is the area of the heated bed. The A1 mini is the clearest demonstration of that on this site: it is not a slow machine, it is not an efficient machine in any clever sense, it simply has less bed to keep warm than anything else profiled here except a V0.2.

What a print actually costs on one

A 45 g PLA part that runs for 6 hours costs $3.23 on this machine — and only 7 cents of that is electricity.

The breakdown is worth reading in full, because it is the opposite of what most people expect. At $20/kg the plastic is 90 cents. The 6-hour run at 65 W draws 0.39 kWh, which at the US average of 17.5 cents/kWh is the 7 cents above. Machine wear at 35 cents an hour is $2.10 — by a wide margin the largest term. A 5% failure allowance adds 16 cents on top.

Machine time dominating a small PLA print is the finding, not the electricity. You can check every input in the cost calculator, and if you replace the 35-cent machine rate with your own — purchase price divided by the hours you expect out of it — the shape of the answer changes more than any other single edit.

The 65 W figure is a plug-meter reading repeatedly reported for this model, not an estimate, which is why the arithmetic above is worth trusting to the cent rather than to the dollar.

The 180 mm bed, in things that do not fit

A build volume is easier to judge as a list of refusals than as three numbers:

  • A helmet, a mask or any wearable shell — those need a 250 mm class machine or a split model and glue.
  • Most single-piece drone frames.
  • A2-format sign lettering in one piece.
  • A large planter, a full-size vase, a keyboard case.

What it does fit is the overwhelming majority of what people actually print: brackets, organisers, replacement knobs, board-game inserts, miniatures, cable management, small enclosures. The mini is not a compromised version of a big printer so much as a correctly sized one for that work.

The 80 °C bed is the sharper limit

The open frame is the reason ABS and ASA are off the menu, and every open machine shares that. The mini has a second, less discussed constraint: its bed tops out at 80 °C where most of its siblings reach 100 or 110 °C.

That matters most for PETG, which is happiest with a bed in the 70–85 °C region. You can print it here, and it works, but you are running at the bottom of the window rather than in the middle of it, so a large flat PETG part is more likely to release at a corner late in the print. If PETG is your main material and your parts are wide, that is a genuine argument for a machine with a hotter plate.

Multi-colour is where the cost model bends

Fitted with the four-spool feeder, the mini prints in colour by purging one filament out of the nozzle before loading the next. The purge is real plastic, it lands in a bin, and on a small model it can exceed the mass of the model itself. The cost calculator has a waste input for exactly this reason: put the purge tower's weight in it, or your per-part figure is fiction.

A single-colour print on the same machine has no such term, which is why colour changes deserve to be a deliberate decision rather than a default.

Two symptoms this layout produces

Because the toolhead carries the extruder directly, stringing here responds to retraction distance far less than a bowden machine's would — the fix is nearly always drying the filament or dropping the nozzle temperature a few degrees. The bed-slinger motion means tall narrow parts show ringing on the Y axis first, and the answer is lower acceleration rather than lower speed.

When the mini is the wrong mini

If you want ABS, ASA or polycarbonate, no accessory fixes an open frame — look at an enclosed machine such as the P1S. If your parts are routinely over 180 mm in any direction, the A1 is the same design philosophy with a 256 mm bed and a modest running-cost increase. Buy the mini because your parts are small, not because it is cheap.
