The P1P is unusual among modern printers in that its most important characteristic is something it does not have. It is a CoreXY machine with the motion system, mainboard and toolhead of an enclosed printer, sold as a bare skeleton with printable panel mounts and an explicit invitation to finish it yourself. Everything worth understanding about it follows from that decision.
Panels change the material list, not the electricity bill
An enclosure does two separate jobs, and they are routinely conflated. It keeps moving air off the part, which is what stops ABS and ASA peeling off the plate. It also traps the bed's heat, which raises the ambient temperature around the print by a useful amount without any heater being involved.
Neither of those changes the printer's steady draw much. The bed still holds the same temperature against the same plate, and the chamber has no heating element of its own — a passive enclosure is warmed entirely by the bed you were already paying for. So panelling a P1P widens what it can print and leaves the hourly cost roughly where it was. Until the panels go on, treat it as an open machine for every purpose. A printer with three sides covered and an open top is still a printer in a draught, and half an enclosure produces the frustrating middle case where prints usually work and occasionally lift at hour four.
The stock nozzle is the sharper limitation
The P1P ships with a brass nozzle. Brass is soft, and every filled filament — carbon fibre, glass fibre, wood, metal powder, glow-in-the-dark — is an abrasive slurry that will widen it measurably within a spool or two. A worn nozzle does not fail cleanly; it drifts, and the symptom is inconsistent extrusion width that no amount of flow calibration fixes because the calibration was correct when you did it.
Fitting a hardened nozzle before the first filled spool is the cheapest insurance available on this machine. The 0.4 mm reference covers what the stock size gives up, and the 0.6 mm page is worth reading first if most of your work is functional — filled filaments and a larger orifice suit each other, because both are choices about strength over detail.
New versus secondhand, and why they differ
The P1P was the entry point to this manufacturer's CoreXY line at launch, positioned below the enclosed model and well below the flagship. The enclosed sibling arrived shortly after at a small premium, which changed the calculus considerably: buying panels and printing mounts is satisfying, but it is no longer obviously cheaper than buying a machine that came with them.
That makes the P1P a strong secondhand proposition and a weaker new one. If you find one already panelled by a previous owner, you have most of the enclosed machine for less money. If you are buying new and you know you want ABS, the argument for starting from a skeleton is mostly sentimental.
What it is genuinely good at
Speed on a 256 mm bed with no enclosure to trap heat is a real combination for PLA and PETG. CoreXY motion keeps the plate still, so tall parts are far less prone to being shaken than they are on a bed-slinger, and the mass being accelerated is the toolhead alone. Long, tall, thin prints — lamp columns, tool handles, model masts — are the geometry where this frame earns its money against a cheaper machine with identical printed specifications.
It is also, unusually, a printer whose owners are expected to modify it, so the accessory ecosystem is real rather than theoretical: panel kits, chamber thermometers, filtration boxes, camera mounts.
Reasons to skip the skeleton
If you never intend to print anything that warps, the panels are dead weight and an open bed-slinger will do the same work for less money. If you want abrasive filaments to work on day one, look at a machine with a hardened nozzle fitted at the factory. And if your honest plan is "I'll enclose it eventually", buy the enclosed version — that plan has a low completion rate, and an unenclosed CoreXY is not what you paid the CoreXY premium for.
